3 Liter Oak Whiskey Wine Barrel

About this barrel

A 3 liter oak whiskey wine barrel hits a sweet spot for many home hobbyists. It holds the equivalent of four standard 750ml bottles, which is big enough for a real batch but small enough to show results quickly. This one is new and listed for both whiskey and wine.

Is a 3L barrel a good first oak barrel?

For many people, yes. It ages faster than larger casks but leaves a bit more room for error than a 1L, so it's easier to avoid over-oaking.

• Fill it with water and let the staves swell before your first batch.
• The char or toast level isn't listed, so ask the seller.
• Check the photos to see whether a stand, spigot and bung are included.
• Keep it filled between uses so the wood doesn't dry out.

It's a good fit for aged Negronis, homemade red wine or a favorite bourbon.
