What can you do with a used Bordeaux wine barrel?

Many buyers turn retired French oak barrels into rustic tables, planters or bar pieces. Others reuse them to age wine, beer or vinegar. A barrel that has dried out needs careful rehydration and inspection first.

• Ask how long it has been empty and how it was stored.
• If you plan to fill it, swell it with water and watch for leaks before committing a batch.
• Check the photos for markings on the barrel heads, the condition of the staves and rust on the hoops.
• It's priced at $159, and the purchase is covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

Barrels are bulky, so check the seller's shipping terms.
