30 gallon California oak fermentation and wine storage Barrel used and stand.

About this barrel

A 30 gallon oak wine barrel with stand is a serious step up for home winemakers. This used barrel is described as California oak and is built for fermentation and wine storage. At $350.00, the included stand saves you a separate purchase. Thirty gallons is about 113 liters, enough for a sizable batch.

Can you reuse a 30 gallon fermentation barrel for new wine?

Yes, if the barrel is sound. Rinse it, swell it with water and check for leaks first. A used barrel gives less oak flavor than a new one, which suits wines that need only gentle aging.

• Prior contents: ask what it held and how long it's been empty.
• Sanitizing: plan to clean it well before filling.
• Stand: confirm the stand's type and that it can hold a full barrel.
• Weight: a full barrel is very heavy, so put it in place before you fill it.
