20 gallon wine barrel

About this barrel

A used 20 gallon wine barrel in oak, holding about 75.7 liters, is listed here for $95.00 by an independent eBay seller. At this size it's a full-scale cask. It suits garden planters, rustic tables and rain catchers, or it can get a second life with homebrewers who want slow, gentle oak contact.

What can you do with a used 20 gallon wine barrel?

Big barrels give up flavor slowly, so a refill picks up mellow oak and wine character over months rather than weeks. Many buyers simply want one as rustic decor.

• Prior contents: the title says wine. The seller's description may say whether it was red or white.
• Condition: it's sold used, so study the photos of the hoops, staves and bunghole.
• Leak check: if you plan to fill it, swell it with water first and watch for drips.
• Logistics: a 20 gallon cask is bulky, so read the shipping or pickup terms in the listing.
