20L Vertical Wooden Wine Barrel w/ Faucet&Bracket for storing whiskey, rum, brandy

About this barrel

If you want to age rum at home, this 20L vertical oak barrel is a new upright cask with a faucet and bracket, listed at $94.54. The title also names whiskey and brandy, but rum is a natural fit because oak rounds out its sweetness and adds dry spice.

Is a 20L vertical oak barrel good for aging rum?

Yes, if you have enough rum to fill it. A barrel should stay close to full so the wood stays wet and less spirit evaporates. For this one, that's about 5.3 gallons.

• Blend ideas: try a mix of white and aged rum, or a batch of spiced rum for the holidays.
• Topping up: add more rum now and then as the level drops.
• Prep: swell the barrel with water first and check the faucet for drips.
• Details: the char or toast level isn't listed, so ask the seller.
