Oak Barrel 5 liter Steel Hoop Whiskey Wine Beer wood barrel

About this barrel

Sitting between tiny novelty casks and bulky 10-liter models, a 5 liter oak barrel is a sweet spot for many home projects. This new one, with steel hoops binding the staves, is listed by an independent eBay seller for $53.00 and named for whiskey, wine and beer.

Why choose a 5 liter oak barrel for home aging?

It holds a useful amount, roughly six to seven standard bottles, while still aging faster than larger barrels because there's more wood contact per ounce.

• Before first use: fill with water and let the wood swell tight.
• Whiskey: sample every week or two and bottle when it tastes right.
• Beer or wine: shorter stints keep oak from overpowering.
• Check: char level, spigot and stand aren't mentioned, so confirm in the listing.
