About this barrel
This Hammer & Axe whiskey barrel is listed as open box at $15, a low price for a mini oak cask. Check the specs carefully, though. The size is given as 1 L, but the title also says 800 ml and 27 fl oz. Confirm the actual capacity with the seller before you buy.
What should I check on an open box mini whiskey barrel?
Since the box has been opened, make sure all the parts are there and the oak is intact.
- Ask whether a spigot, stand or bung is included.
- Look for cracks or gaps between the staves in the photos.
- Swell the barrel with water before you fill it with whiskey or other spirits.
- Expect fast aging. Small casks need frequent tasting so the oak doesn't overpower the spirit.
