5L/1.32Gal Aging Barrel Wooden Whiskey Barrel Bourbon Wine Barrel Home

About this barrel

Bourbon isn't the only option: a 5L oak barrel is a classic vessel for homemade vinegar. This new 1.32-gallon wooden barrel costs $38.88 and suits that slow, rewarding project. The listing also mentions aging whiskey and wine if you'd rather start there.

Can you make vinegar in a 5L oak barrel?

Yes, but plan to keep it for vinegar only. Vinegar bacteria stay in the wood afterward, so the barrel shouldn't go back to spirits or wine.

• Swell it with water first so it holds liquid.
• Vinegar needs air, so leave space at the top and cover the opening with breathable cloth instead of a tight bung.
• Wine or cider makes a good base for red wine vinegar or cider vinegar.
• Check the listing photos for the bung hole and any tap.
