5 Liter (1.32 Gallon) Oak Barrel New/Unused Stand Spigot

About this barrel

Many home distillers start with a 5 liter oak barrel, and this one is new and unused, with a stand and spigot. It holds 1.32 gallons, which is a good balance: small enough to show oak character within weeks, big enough to make the effort worthwhile.

How long should whiskey stay in a 5 liter oak barrel?

There's no fixed rule. Small casks work fast, so start tasting after a week or two and bottle it when you like the flavor. Check the listing for the char level, which affects how fast it ages.

• Swell before use: fill it with water, wait for the leaks to stop, then drain it.
• Spigot: lets you sample as it ages without disturbing the bung.
• Good for: bourbon-style spirits, rum, fortified wine or a batch of cocktails.
• Price: $58.00 from an independent eBay seller.
