Thousand Oaks Barrel 1 Gallon Charred Oak Bourbon Aging Barrel

About this barrel

A 1 gallon charred oak barrel is a small way to try aging bourbon at home. This Thousand Oaks Barrel listing is new, made of American oak, and sized at 3.8 liters for $173.72.

How fast does a 1 gallon barrel age bourbon?

Smaller barrels put more spirit in contact with wood, so they tend to age faster than full-size casks. That means you should taste often instead of following a long calendar. Start with a short test and pull the batch when it suits your palate.

• Prep: swell a new barrel with water before filling, and watch for leaks first.
• Char: the title says charred, but the exact char level isn't stated, so check the listing.
• Capacity: 1 gallon, about 3.8L, enough for one small batch.
• Extras: confirm any stand, bung or spigot in the listing.
