5L/1.32Gal Aging Barrel Wooden Whiskey Barrel Bourbon Wine Barrel Home Brewer

About this barrel

An oak barrel for home brewing lets you make barrel-aged stouts and try sour beers without a full-size cask. This new 5L, 1.32-gallon oak aging barrel is listed at $36.93 by an independent eBay seller and is aimed at home brewers.

Is a 5L oak barrel for home brewing worth it for beer?

Yes, for small batches. Five liters is only part of a typical homebrew batch, so you can age some of it in oak and compare it with the rest.

• Season it: many brewers rinse the barrel with a spirit first so the beer picks up some bourbon character.
• Swell first: soak it with water until it stops seeping before the beer goes in.
• Keep it full: air space lets the beer oxidize, so top it up or drain it promptly.
• Check the listing: the char level and included fittings aren't stated.
