Whiskey Barrel 27oz Barrel

About this barrel

A 27oz whiskey barrel is about as small as practical aging gets. This new oak cask, listed at $40.50, holds a little more than a standard 750 ml bottle. That makes it a low-risk way to experiment with barrel-finished bourbon, rum or batched cocktails.

How long should you age spirits in a 27 oz barrel?

Not long. With so little liquid and so much wood, flavor builds fast. Taste after several days and pull it when you like the flavor.

• Details are sparse: the title doesn't mention char, stand, spigot or engraving, so read the full listing.
• Prep: soak it with water until the staves stop leaking.
• Reuse: later fills age more slowly as the wood gives up its flavor.
• Gift idea: a fun starter barrel for a curious home bartender.
