5 Gallon Oak Barrel, Wooden Whiskey Barrel & Wine Barrel, 20 Liter

About this barrel

This new 5 gallon oak whiskey barrel, also sold as a 20 liter wine barrel, gives home distillers and winemakers a mid-size vessel for $363.97. Twenty liters is big enough for a real batch, yet small enough to age noticeably faster than a full-size cask.

What can you age in a 20 liter oak barrel?

Whiskey, rum, brandy, wine and even vinegar all work. At this size, spirits pick up oak flavor quickly, so taste on a regular schedule and bottle when the flavor is where you want it.

• Prep: swell the barrel with water until it stops weeping, then fill.
• Char or toast: the title doesn't say, so check the listing details for the level.
• Extras: see whether a spigot, bung or stand is included.
• Reuse: after a whiskey run, the same barrel can mellow a second spirit, or a batch of wine.
