About this barrel

The Midwest Barrel 59/60 gallon California red wine barrel is a full-size oak cask of about 227 liters. The title calls it an authentic California red wine barrel, but the listing condition says New, so read the description to learn its history. An independent eBay seller has it listed at $672.36.

What can you do with a 60 gallon ex-red wine barrel?

Brewers often use former wine casks for sour or barrel-aged beers. Distillers use them to finish whiskey or rum. Large barrels work slowly, which suits long aging.

• Volume: Plan on roughly 59 to 60 gallons to fill it properly.
• Before filling: Swelling it with water helps tighten staves that may have dried out.
• Space: Make sure your floor, rack and doorways can handle a full-size cask.
• Verify: Ask about the toast level, what it held before and the freight cost.

The purchase is covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee.
