About this barrel

Homebrewers eyeing barrel-aged stouts or sours will find a 5 gallon oak aging barrel a practical step up from oak chips, and this new 20L wooden keg is listed at $374.69 on eBay. The title pitches it for spirits, wine and beer batches alike, so it can move between projects as your interests change.

Is a 5 gallon oak aging barrel the right size for homebrew?

For many brewers, yes. A typical 5 gallon batch lines up with this capacity, but check the listing for the exact usable volume.

• Soak with water first so the staves seal before you transfer beer.
• Top off as liquid evaporates to limit oxygen exposure.
• Clean it and store it wet or with a holding solution between uses.
• A similar 20L listing appears at a different price, so compare details before you buy.

Char level isn't stated in the title, so ask the seller if it affects your recipe.
