About this barrel

Made in Nancy, France, this vintage French oak whisky barrel with stand and spigot brings some European cellar style to a home bar. Its condition is listed as open box, which is unusual for a vintage piece, so read the description for the full story.

Is a vintage French oak whisky barrel good for aging?

It may be, but its age and storage history matter. Ask the seller whether it has ever held liquid and how it was kept.

• Swell it with water and watch for leaks before you trust it with spirits.
• Capacity isn't listed, so check the dimensions in the description.
• Look at the stand and spigot in the photos for wear or missing parts.
• It works just as well as a display piece on a back bar or in a wine cellar.

For fans of French cooperage, a barrel with a named town of origin adds a nice story to the shelf.
