Wooden Whiskey Barrel

About this barrel

Have a batch of rum, beer or cider that could use a whiskey finish? A used whiskey aging barrel like this oak one, listed at $90.00, can pass some of its earlier flavor on to the next fill. If it held whiskey before, that character can carry over.

Does a second-use whiskey barrel age as fast as a new one?

No. Seasoned oak works more slowly and gently. That's a plus for long finishes, where a new barrel could overpower the drink.

• Check its history: ask the seller what it held and when it was emptied.
• Capacity: the title doesn't give one, so check the description.
• Prep: swell it with water until it's tight, then fill it without letting it sit dry for long.
• Flavor tip: taste it regularly and bottle when the flavor is right.
