Small Oak Wooden Barrel Oak Wooden Keg

About this barrel

This used small oak barrel is a cheap way to start aging at home. An independent eBay seller has it at $30. The title calls it a wooden keg but doesn't give a capacity, so the details that matter are in the listing itself.

What should I check on a used small oak barrel?

Mainly the wood and the volume. A pre-owned keg can be a good deal, but dry or stained staves change how well it works.

• Capacity: the size isn't in the title. Look for liters in the description or ask the seller.
• Leaks: soak it in water for a few days so the staves swell and seal before you fill it.
• Past contents: ask what it held. A barrel that held wine or whiskey will flavor whatever goes in next.
• Pace: a smaller keg ages faster, so taste early and often.
