Vintage wood oak wine beer barrel keg with tap

About this barrel

Picture a vintage oak wine barrel keg with tap at the end of your bar, ready for guests to pour from. This wooden beer and wine keg already has a tap fitted. An independent eBay seller has it listed at $75.

Is a vintage oak keg with tap safe to drink from?

That depends on its history and condition, and the title doesn't cover either one. Many buyers use older kegs as decor. Others use them for short-term serving after a thorough clean and soak.

• The title doesn't state the condition, so study the photos for leaks, stains or loose hoops.
• Capacity isn't listed. Check the listing for size before you plan a batch.
• Before any drink goes in, swell the wood with water to see whether it seals.
• Ask whether a stand or bung comes with the tap.
