About this barrel
If you're ready to move past mini casks, this Black Swan 5 gallon whiskey barrel holds about 18.9 liters. It's American oak with a Char 3 interior. The listing names bourbon, rye, malt whiskey and moonshine, so it suits anyone aging white spirit or finishing a store-bought bottle.
What does a Char 3 whiskey barrel do?
Char 3 is a medium-heavy toast that adds deep color plus caramel and smoky notes. In a 5 gallon cask the aging is slower than in a 1 or 3 liter barrel, which gives you more control.
- Before filling: swell it with water until the seams stop weeping.
- Good for: aging new-make moonshine, finishing rye, or blending malt whiskey.
- Space: a full 5 gallon barrel is heavy, so pick a sturdy spot before you fill it.
- Included parts: check the listing for a stand, bung or spigot.
