Barrel Oak

About this barrel

This used oak barrel is listed simply as 'Barrel Oak' for $80, so the photos and description will tell you most of what you need to know. It's tagged for aging, which makes it worth a look for a homebrewer or spirits hobbyist on a budget.

What should I ask before buying a used oak barrel?

The title doesn't give the size, condition or history. Ask the seller about capacity, any leaks or cracks, and what the barrel held before, since previous contents affect flavor.

• Look closely at the hoops and staves in the photos.
• Plan to rinse it and swell it with water before any use.
• A barrel that held wine or spirits can add extra character to beer or vinegar.
• Your purchase is covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

With the right answers from the seller, a secondhand barrel can be a good way to start home aging.
